Migrating from on-premise to Microsoft Azure (approach, design & implementation) - Part 1 of 5

It’s no secret that business is moving quickly towards cloud-based and hybrid environments. If you are planning your movement to Azure, its worth considering the different approaches of a cloud migration strategy and the pros and cons of each approach.

Careful planning and strategy should be defined before starting the actual migration to avoid any risks and challenges during this phase.

A recommended approach is to start by accessing the applications and infrastructure by

evaluating the environment and inter-dependencies of all the applications in the portfolio. This helps in identifying whether the components and dependencies can be migrated to cloud without affecting the existing applications and the other on-premise applications that are still running on the private date centers. The information from this stage can help you make decisions which part of the application or applications needs to be kept on-premises and which can be moved to Azure. In this stage you can figure out whether you need to build a hybrid infrastructure and proceed or make a complete shift to cloud.

Once you have gathered this information, you now have to make the choice for a proper migration strategy. Cloud migration strategies fall into four broad patterns:

  • Rehost

  • Refactor

  • Re-architect

  • Rebuild.

In this series we'll have a look into what each of these strategies, the pros and cons of each strategy and on what basis we choose one strategy for your cloud adoption journey.
